Cloud storage service provider Zetta added data protection to its repertoire at VMworld today with the debut of Zetta Data Protect solution, which the company bills as a low-cost replacement for traditional backups.
Unlike many cloud storage providers who offer archive and backup services and are slowly moving upstream into primary storage, Zetta entered the cloud storage market by tackling primary file data first. The companys Storage Service looks and performs just like a local network-mounted file server and is aimed at the unstructured content that makes up the bulk of enterprise data, rather than database applications that demand real-time performance.
The new Zetta Data Protect offering brings the service into the backup space through use of a technology called the ZettaMirror agent, which protects data by securely replicating disparate enterprise data sources to the Zetta Storage Service, creating an online, available, and verified copy of the data.
For the compliance conscious, Zetta Data Protect offers a seven-year version history, encryption at rest, and native POSIX compliance.
The service replicates data to multiple locations throughout the United States and is available in a mountable and viewable file system format, accessible via NFS, rsync, FTP, WebDAV, and other standard storage protocols.
The default snapshot history on the Zetta system allows restores of any file versions from the past seven years. Zetta can further replicate data between its data centers to provide copies in multiple geographic zones, protecting against total site destruction and regional disasters.
According to the company, the Zetta Storage Service is compatible with existing on-premise storage systems and integrates with existing IT workflows. Zettas architecture includes RAIN-6 N+3, which guarantees availability and integrity even in the event of multiple complete node failure.
Company co-founder and CEO, Jeff Treuhaft, said the Data Protect service costs $256 per month for 1TB of storage and includes all file uploads and data management. Additional storage runs $0.25 per gigabyte, per month and data retrievals are also subject to a fee.Zetta will be demonstrating Data Protect at this weeks VMworld conference in San Francisco.
