Storage Management: Virtualizing Data Storage

Corporations may be shrinking the number of servers, but data continues to multiply. According to this Forbes article, storage can be virtualized to achieve the same benefits of higher server utilization. Philip Soran, president and chief executive of storage networking company, Compellent Technologies, talks about ways to take control of this problem and cut costs.

"If you look at traditional storage, it's allocated in anticipation of usage. If you have an e-mail application the administrator may say it will require 2 terabytes of storage to do e-mail for the year. After that the space is allocated and locked up and no one else can use it, even though it's really just a bunch of zeros that are waiting to be filled up. A better alternative is to allocate whatever you want but only grab disk storage when you actually write to it. You may only be using 200 gigabytes of the 2 terabytes of space."
