Unitrends Announces Adaptive Deduplication
Unitrends has announced Adaptive Deduplication: a content-aware data reduction mechanism that adapts dynamically to reduce the storage footprint of the content it is protecting. As noted in this Computer Technology Review story, adaptive deduplication delivers the advantages of deduplication without the capital expense of dedicated hardware-based deduplication devices.
"Adaptive Deduplication is a data reduction scheme that is integrated directly with the Unitrends backup appliance. The solution adapts dynamically based on a range of factors, including content of the data being protected, data reduction possible using compression, data reduction possible using deduplication, amount of secondary (disk) storage that may be used by Adaptive Deduplication, amount of primary (RAM) storage that may be used by Adaptive Deduplication, and the number of processor cores that may be used by Adaptive Deduplication."
