A Caution on Solid State Drive Market

Author Pail McWilliams offers cautionary advice in his article on Ticker Spy, about the Solid State Drive (SSD) market. Although the market segment will see huge increases in demand, for various reasons, margins will remain under pressure and in time, McWilliams says, small independent suppliers are likely to be crowded out.


"Today, the leading SSD suppliers provide their products in a HDD form factor for convenience of integration, but that is changing rapidly. Apple (AAPL) has already moved away from the HDD form factor, and is simply soldering NAND flash and a controller IC directly to the motherboard in some MacBook PCs. Intel (INTC) partners with Micron Technology (MU) for NAND Flash, and uses Marvell Technology (MRVL) controller chips.”
