Intersection of Storage Options

Processor reports that tape is still used in enterprise for storage and magnetic tape has been a standard data storage media for more than 50 years. Most enterprise tape storage systems are automated carousels and libraries, but there is a convergence of storage options happening. SAN and NAS have met at a crossroads and enterprises continue to grow. Enterprises need to be open to using different types of storage as some are more suited to certain types of data then others.

"’We know that disk usage is on the rise,’ explains Gartner’s Russell. ‘While 65% of organizations say their backup methodology is disk-to-disk-to-tape, we see the middle disk in there is getting much larger and more sophisticated with technologies such as deduplication, but there’s still tape somewhere in the process.’”
