Tacit Networks' Failover Option Boosts Storage Caching

Tacit Networks yesterday announced the availability of a new failover add-on to its Tacit Networks Storage Caching product line. With the addition of the Tacit Cache Server failover option, service availability is guaranteed in the event of a cache server failure by automatically rerouting traffic to a standby cache server, ensuring critical data is neither lost nor delayed.

"Tacit Cache Server failover is part of our overall vision to shrink the WAN down to LAN size in terms of speed, convenience, and efficiency," says Trevor Hughes, vice president of product management for Tacit Networks. "In addition to high speed file sharing across the enterprise, we now provide a way, through this failover option, to guarantee that cache server failure will be dealt with seamlessly, eliminating the possibility of downtime and service interruption. This option is a critical requirement for many enterprise customers."

Users who purchase the Tacit Cache Server failover option will receive a reserve Tacit Cache Server at the central site that passively mirrors data from an active Tacit Cache Server. Upon any type of failure, the passive server will immediately take over as the active server. In this way, remote users will experience no discontinuity or data loss, according to Tacit.

Tacit storage caching solutions consist of Tacit Storage Cache appliances and Tacit Cache Servers that share information using the Storage Caching/Internet Protocol (SC/IP), a distributed, fault-tolerant protocol that is optimized for high-latency WAN environments. The Tacit Storage Cache attaches directly to the LAN at a remote site and connects back to a Tacit Cache Server in the data center through a gateway using standard virtual private network (VPN) Internet connections. The Tacit Cache Server is a thin appliance that sits in front of a network-attached storage (NAS) appliance or storage area network (SAN) system at the data center and coordinates access by multiple remote Storage Caches to the consolidated storage resources.
