LSI Logic Scores Next-Gen Storage Deals

Networking chip maker LSI Logic has secured a contract to put its chips in several next-generation Fujitsu Siemens storage products.

The Milpitas, Calif.-based firm said the three-year, $80 million-plus contract covers its processor and MegaRAID storage adapter boards in the Dutch-based holding company's storage platforms, including its Ultra320 SCSI controllers, RAID on motherboard products, and discrete RAID adapters.

Initially, Fujitsu Siemens will ship LSI Logic's MegaRAID SCSI 320-1 and MegaRAID SCSI 320-2 RAID host storage adapters integrated into its FSC PRIMERGY server product lines. As products ramp to full production, FSC said it will also make use of the MegaRAID SCSI 320-4X, a quad-channel Ultra320 PCI-X RAID card, which can be configured with PRIMERGY server and storage subsystem products.

Fujitsu Siemens said it will also be using the single-channel LSI53C1020, the dual-channel LSI53C1030, and the LSI53C1035 RAID on Chip controller across multiple server platforms. The controllers use the company's Fusion-MPT (Message Passing Technology) architecture, which LSI says makes it possible to add in RAID features such as Integrated Striping and Integrated Mirroring.

The partnership is part of LSI's components and systems storage product drive, which is estimated to generate $1 billion dollars of business this year alone.

"By delivering proven technology and superior RAID and silicon products, we are able to help partners such as Fujitsu Siemens bring their customers the most robust storage solutions possible," says LSI executive vice-president John D'Errico. "This market position will enable us to develop next-generation technologies such as Serial Attached SCSI."

In addition to supplying OEMs worldwide, LSI Logic supplies products to the channel with distribution through US partners such as Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Bell Microproducts, Insight Electronics, Ingram-Micro, Microland, and TechData.

In a related story, LSI this week announced its newest OEM agreement is with RLX Technologies. The Houston, Tx.-based company provides Web hosting companies with a blade architecture for building and managing infrastructure.

Under the terms of the agreement, RLX will use controllers from LSI Logic Storage Systems to provide external storage for its ActivIT ServerBlade products.
