Enterprise Storage Snapshots offers a weekly wrap-up of what’s going on in the storage industry. Here are our storage news highlights for the fourth week of October: Maxtor and LSI Logic team on the first serial storage working demo, Certance releases a new D2D2T data protection appliance, Kashya announces it will be exhibiting its new network-based data replication solution at next week’s SNW conference, StoneFly and CommVault partner to provide cost-effective disk-based backup, and Adaptec and NetApp announce a new IP SAN solution designed for SMBs.

Maxtor and LSI Logic Team on First Serial Storage Working Demo

Maxtor Corporation and LSI Logic this past week partnered on the first public demonstration of data exchange between Serial ATA (SATA) and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard drives via SAS controllers and expanders. The demonstration was held during the “Maxtor Serial Storage in a Box Technology Symposium” in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The interoperability demonstration included Maxtor MaXLine SATA drives and Maxtor’s prototype SAS hard drives in conjunction with LSI Logic SAS controller and SAS expander prototypes.

SAS is the next generation of the SCSI interface and is designed to improve storage system performance, scalability, and availability while providing compatibility with high-capacity Serial ATA (SATA) drives and dual port, high performance SAS drives.

“This is the first ever demonstration of four key protocols operating simultaneously,” said David Steele, director of product planning and management for the LSI Logic storage standard product division. “By being able to demonstrate a practical implementation of SAS and SATA interoperability, LSI Logic and Maxtor have moved next-generation SCSI technology another step closer to real product availability.”

Certance’s Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape CP 3100 Aims for SMBs

With a price tag of less than $1500, Certance’s new CP 3100 is specifically designed to provide and simplify high-end disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) data protection benefits for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

“SMBs have many of the same challenges safeguarding data as larger companies,” says Robert Amatruda, research manager at IDC. “The Certance CP 3100 addresses the need for a cost-effective, easy-to-use data-protection solution for SMBs that integrates the advantages of disk with the benefits of tape.”

The CP 3100 comes bundled with an internal hard drive (160 or 320GB) and is compatible with all versions of DDS-4 and DAT 72 tape, including drives and media manufactured by Certance, as well as HP and Sony. The drive itself is available in half-height, desktop, and 1U rackmount configurations.

The appliance can automatically migrate data stored on disk to tape for archiving, without intervention from the host or need for “cloning” software, relieving many of the operating constraints faced by IT managers who have limited backup windows. The CP 3100 additionally offers sustained transfer rates of up to 22MB/sec (79 GB/hr); includes Yosemite TapeWare XE backup software; and enables remote setup, management, and monitoring via any Web browser.

The CP 3100 is the first product from Certance based on its Data Protection Architecture (DPA) initiative, which the company designed specifically for direct and network-attached protection of business-critical data. Built from the ground up, the DPA initiative presents a unique opportunity to solution providers focused on the rapid deployment of unique data protection solutions for their customer base.

“The Certance CP 3100 validates our commitment to our customers for powerful, intelligent, affordable, and simplified solutions for SMBs,” says Ryan Malone, senior product marketing manager at Certance. “Other D2D2T-based solutions can be out of reach with initial costs between $7,000 and $40,000.”

The CP 3100 family will be available in early November through the company’s worldwide network of channel partners and systems integrators, as well as through Certance’s online store at http://shop.certance.com.

Kashya to Exhibit KBX4000 at SNW

Kashya next week will exhibit its network-based data replication solution using Brocade’s SilkWorm Fabric Application Platform at Storage Networking World in Orlando, Florida, October 27-30.

Kashya’s KBX4000 is an end-to-end solution for enterprise data replication that leverages advanced algorithms to intelligently manage data and bandwidth, and to deliver guaranteed consistent replicas of business-critical data in the event of any possible failure or disaster, even when that data spans multiple heterogeneous storage and servers.

The KBX4000 is designed to lower the TCO of enterprise storage replication by applying a combination of unique technologies to eliminate the distance, cost, performance, and management limitations of traditional data protection products.

StoneFly and CommVault Team to Provide Cost-Effective Disk-Based Backup

StoneFly Networks and CommVault Systems have formed a strategic alliance to provide cost-effective, disk-based (D2D) backup solutions that dramatically reduce backup time and maintain efficient local area network (LAN) performance during backup and restore procedures.

Under the terms of the partnership, StoneFly will resell CommVault’s Galaxy Backup and Recovery software, which improves data protection while minimizing the administration required to meet changing IT requirements. StoneFly will offer Galaxy as part of a complete D2D backup IP SAN system available in bundled configurations that start at $33,995 for a 1TB solution.

StoneFly D2D backup IP SANs will include a StoneFly Storage Concentrator i3000 with storage provisioning and mirroring software, an iSCSI initiator, ATA storage, and CommVault Galaxy.

“By aligning with CommVault, StoneFly underscores its commitment to delivering applications that leverage storage assets and assure that data receives maximum protection,” stated Bob Preston, vice president of marketing for StoneFly Networks.

In partnering with StoneFly, CommVault will be able to provide customers with “a simple and affordable way to improve their backup processes, allowing them to move data depending on its lifecycle stage, and eliminating the typical constraints imposed by the LAN,” said Larry Cormier, vice president of marketing with CommVault Systems.

Adaptec and NetApp Target SMBs with IP SAN Solution

Adaptec, Inc. and Network Appliance, Inc. have partnered to deliver an IP storage area network (SAN) solution that enables small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) to deploy cost-effective, easy-to-manage SANs for enterprise-level applications such as online transaction processing, email, and enterprise resource planning.

The Adaptec-NetApp IP SAN solution leverages the proven performance of SCSI and the low cost of Ethernet to give SMBs a simple, affordable way to deploy SANs for enterprise-level applications. It consists of two Adaptec 7211 iSCSI adapters and a NetApp FAS250 system with 250 gigabytes of storage capacity, and can scale to 1 TB. The Adaptec 7211 completely offloads TCP/IP processing to reduce CPU utilization and increase the performance of network storage applications.

“Adaptec and Network Appliance are reducing the cost and complexity of deploying SANs for business and storage applications, including email, database, CRM and ERP, consolidation, and disaster recovery,” says Ram Jayam, vice president and general manager of Adaptec’s Storage Networking Group. “Together, we are combining the scalability, availability, and utilization benefits of iSCSI-based SANs with integrated world-class support to bring enterprise-class network storage capabilities to a broader range of customers.”

The Adaptec-NetApp IP SAN solution features central technical support to reduce total cost of SAN ownership. It’s available now to resellers through Arrow Enterprise Storage Solutions, 800-322-3475.
