Onaro has unveiled a new product that makes sure applications get the storage resources they need.

Onaro says SANscreen Application Insight 2.0 combines storage utilization data with an understanding of the application path to provide a complete picture of storage resource utilization and efficiency. The company says the product helps storage users analyze storage tier assignments, load balance the entire application portfolio and prevent application outages, improving utilization and performance and saving on capital costs.

“It’s very easy to show a couple hundred thousand dollars in savings with this,” said Onaro marketing vice president Bryan Semple.

Database archiving specialist Princeton Softech is a new user of the product — and pleased with what it’s seen so far.

“It gives us a lot of visibility into the SAN fabric that we didn’t have before,” said Jim Rosikiewicz, manager of network services at Princeton Softech. “Prior to that, we were blind.”

“We can chart performance over time to determine where bottlenecks exist, analyze what triggers them, and understand their associations,” said Rosikiewicz. “This enables us to set policies, balance our SANs for performance and redundancy, and to use them optimally.”

SANscreen Application Insight helps Princeton Softech with capacity utilization, balancing, troubleshooting and event notification, said Rosikiewicz. A VMware environment for the last 3 1/2 years, Princeton Softech has 190TB of SATA-based storage — which is expected to double in size again this year.

Princeton Softech looked at products from McData and Vizioncore before settling on Onaro. The company is also considering Onaro’s core Foundation change management product, even though it will have to purchase Hitachi HiCommand management software to do so, said Rosikiewicz.

SANscreen Application Insight matches performance needs with the best storage tier, load balances the entire application portfolio across all storage resources, and uncovers infrastructure-related issues that cause application performance problems, such as port throughput, errors and traffic balance ratios between paths.

Pricing for SANscreen Application Insight starts at $70 per port.
