EMC (NYSE: EMC) this week boosted its data protection and storage management capabilities for VMware (NYSE: VMW) environments and also unveiled a new email archiving and compliance product.

EMC has added VMware plug-ins for its Celerra unified data storage systems that give users new thin provisioning, deduplication, management, cloning and failback capabilities.

Brad Bunce, EMC’s director of unified storage marketing, said the new features “give VMware administrators new levels of controls,” so VMware storage management doesn’t require the involvement of storage admins.

EMC — which also offers VMware storage management plug-ins for its Symmetrix and Clariion SAN arrays — claims the new thin provisioning, deduplication and management features can cut virtual machine storage capacity requirements by half.

The software enables Celerra management for VMware environments from the VMware vCenter console, and VMware administrators can also perform snapshots or clone operations of individual virtual machines from the vCenter Server console.

EMC is also extending its failover and failback capabilities to NFS environments with the EMC Failback Plug-In for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager software to automate failback and improve disaster recovery and business continuity.

The plug-ins are available for download to EMC Celerra customers with current maintenance arrangements, and are also available from EMC, Dell and authorized partners.

EMC Adds Compliance to Email Archiving

Also this week, EMC unveiled EMC SourceOne Email Supervisor, which monitors inbound and outbound email and instant messages for compliance with internal policies and regulations such as those mandated by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD).

Email Supervisor is the latest addition to EMC’s SourceOne family of archiving, compliance and eDiscovery products. SourceOne Email Supervisor lets users “sample indexed messages from the archive, present them for supervisory review and save evidence of review actions,” EMC said.

The new tool also helps compliance with NASD Rules 3010 and 3100, which mandate procedures for broker-dealers to monitor electronic communications.

Gregory Kosinski, director of product marketing for EMC SourceOne, said future plans for EMC’s archiving, compliance and eDiscovery product portfolio include broadening the types of content covered and new tools and protection features, but he did not elaborate on EMC’s plans.
