EMC (NYSE: EMC) and NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) announced a couple of deals this week to bring data backup and recovery services to the cloud.
EMC's Data Domain deduplication systems will power SunGard's new Secure2Disk backup and recovery solution.
SunGard said the offering gives companies "onsite operational restart capabilities and rapid, offsite recovery that seamlessly integrates with a customer's existing backup software."
The service supports production operations with onsite backup for quick retrieval of recently updated files, emails and other documents accidentally deleted or damaged, and SunGard also helps speed up remote recovery by storing backup data at a secure SunGard recovery center for recovery, which benefits companies looking for remote disaster recovery capabilities.http://o1.qnsr.com/log/p.gif?;n=203;c=204655439;s=10655;x=7936;f=201806121855330;u=j;z=TIMESTAMP;a=20400368;e=i
Data Domain's deduplication technology minimizes replication bandwidth and the storage required for maintaining data at both the local and the secondary site. The Secure2Disk solution provides Data Domain systems at both a customer site and a SunGard recovery center, automatically transferring backup data to a SunGard site. Customers can also transfer design and execution of some or all of the steps in the testing recovery process to SunGard's operations staff through a SunGard Managed Recovery Services offering.
Halifax Health is using the service to cut its disaster recovery time by more than half over its tape-based system. Kevin Noel, manager IT risk at Halifax Health, said SunGard Secure2Disk "provided us a solution that includes backup software compatibility for easy implementation and a compelling ROI model of a monthly subscription avoiding capital expenses."
NetApp, meanwhile, unveiled several data storage services aimed at service providers, including an online backup service powered by Asigra.
The offerings include:
- NetApp Service-Oriented Infrastructure (SOI), which uses NetApp storage as the foundation for all NetApp IT-as-a-service designs. It gives service providers a unified infrastructure to deploy storage, network and compute resources in a repeatable manner, speeding time to market, improving service and lowering costs.
- Backup/Recovery as a Service (BRaaS), a joint offering with Asigra that gives service providers a design guide to quickly deploy BRaaS solutions. Asigra Cloud Backup software runs on the NetApp SOI.
- Data Protection as a Service (DPaaS), a design guide that allows service providers to quickly deploy DPaaS offerings, including archive and disaster recovery (DR). It offers NetApp technologies such as FlexClone for DR testing, SnapLock for compliance, and MultiStore for secure multi-tenancy.
- NetApp Open Management lets service providers use NetApp's storage efficiency and services automation capabilities regardless of whether they use NetApp or another technology vendor's IT service management or virtualization framework, via NetApp's open software developer kit (SDK), Web services application programming interfaces (APIs) and policy-based automation infrastructure. The feature makes for rapid storage provisioning and protection services.
