Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. announced at the Spring 2001 Storage Networking World(R) (SNW) Conference and Expo that the two companies have developed an implementation of a Common Information Model (CIM) prototype for storage area networks (SANs) using Brocade Fabric Access(TM), the application programming interface (API) to the Brocade Fabric operating system (Fabric OS(TM)).

According to the companies, CIM is a technology that is designed to allow users to better manage systems and SAN infrastructures through a robust, standard instrumentation model. Through this technology collaboration, developers should be able to write applications that will manage a SAN that is modeled using the CIM standards. Sun and Brocade are showcasing the CIM technology demonstration at the SNW Interoperability Lab on the main show floor. The SNW "Emerging Technologies" Interoperability Lab showcases a Sun StorEdge(TM) T3 storage array from Sun Microsystems, Brocade SilkWorm(R) Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure, and SAN management technology framework

In addition to the CIM technology initiative, Brocade and Sun recently announced qualification of the Brocade SilkWorm(R) family of Fibre Channel fabric switches for interoperability with Sun StorEdge(TM) T3 and A5200 arrays and Sun Enterprise(TM) and workgroup server.
