Metropolitan optical network provider Telseon and Nishan Systems, a provider of standard iSCSI, iFCP, and iSNS IP Storage switches, announced a joint solution to carry Fibre Channel over Gigabit Ethernet to extend the capabilities of Storage Area Networks (SAN) to Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN).

With Nishan’s IP Storage switches, storage providers can feed Fibre Channel traffic seamlessly onto Telseon’s instantly scalable, secure Gigabit Ethernet network for storage data transport throughout metropolitan markets.

The interoperability test series included remote backup and restore, asynchronous mirroring, and transaction processing applications. Nishan IPS 3000 Series Storage switches were used to build two SANs. After a baseline test with two IPS 3000 switches directly connected, Telseon provided a Gigabit Ethernet metro network between the two SANs. When Telseon’s network was used, there was minimal impact on performance, introducing only a 1.2% latency when compared to the baseline test.

“With storage demand exploding, managing growth and cost while providing flexible access across metro areas is a key challenge to the CIO. With Nishan switches, Telseon is enabling the next-generation of storage architectures by offering a total solution for Fibre Channel traffic originating in a SAN along with pure IP data from a Network-Attached Storage environment,” said David White, director of product marketing at Telseon. “Our joint solution gives CIOs a cost-effective way to exceed the 10-kilometer Fibre Channel distance constraint, with the assurance that the network latency is virtually equivalent to connecting two storage devices back-to-back.”

Nishan’s products support the emerging iSCSI IP Storage devices, as well as Fibre Channel and NAS devices, so customers have the option of moving gradually or immediately from their existing Fibre Channel network to a more manageable, scalable, all-IP storage network.

Telseon’s Service Level Agreement includes guarantees for both throughput and low-latency, in addition to availability and scalable bandwidth on demand.
