EMC, NetApp are Storage Staples, But See Loss
Standard & Poor’s downgrade of the U.S. debt rating caused large-scale negative reaction which effected the data storage sector. According to Market Watch, EMC (NYSE: EMC) and NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) both were given raised ratings to buy from hold but both companies saw a fall in shares in spite of that. Ongoing market selloff has made both companies more attractive considering they are in a "staple" area of data storage.
"In a pair of research notes, Hunt said data storage could be the equivalent of a ‘consumer staple’ for corporations, and that ‘in a mild downturn, we would expect storage spending to remain a priority due to [companies’] need.’
"Hunt then said that for both EMC and NetApp, ‘[market] share gain ability might even be enhanced’ in the current business environment, and both have a high level of deferred revenue that provides them with some earnings stability and protection compared with other tech companies.”
