The High Price of Oracle's Storage Strategy

In a SEC filing, Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) said its latest acquisition, Pillar Data owed Oracle's CEO Larry Ellison and his affiliates approximately $544 million for amounts borrowed in prior years.Although Oracle is not coming forth with the price it paid for the acquisition, CRN says the purchase came at a high price relative to its installed base.

Pillar joins Oracle’s storage strategy line which includes its Exadata line, the Oracle ZFS storage appliance, Pillar Data's Axiom SAN array, and StorageTek tape library product line which Sun acquired several years ago.


"How much Oracle eventually pays Ellison, his affiliates, and Pillar Data executives will depend on Pillar Data's performance. That determination will not be made until November of 2014, Oracle said in the SEC filing.”
