Company description: Commvault offers data protection and information management solutions to mid- and enterprise-level organizations worldwide seeking to get value from their data. Commvault can help companies protect, access and use all of their data. Founded in 1988, Commvault is publicly traded (NASDAQ: CVLT) and headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey.

Product description: Commvault HyperScale adds scale-out infrastructure to the Commvault Data Platform. It can integrate with storage arrays, hypervisors, applications and cloud providers. It takes advantage of a built-in operating environment, virtualization, and storage technologies from Red Hat. This backup product is primarily aimed at the secondary storage market, which Commvault believes accounts for 70% of customer data.

The appliance version integrates compute, storage, networking, virtualization, backup and recovery, lifecycle data management and analytics into a single platform. Those preferring the software option can choose hardware configuration sizes and models from the likes of Fujitsu, Cisco, Lenovo, HPE, Super Micro Computer, Huawei and Dell-EMC.

“CommVault provides deployment flexibility, on-premises simplicity, elasticity, resiliency and scale for managing secondary data,” said Phil Wandrei, Director, Solutions Marketing Management, Solutions Marketing at CommVault.

Key features:

·  Solutions are available as an all-in-one appliance or a reference architecture model enabling organizations to choose their hardware provider or scale for the future.

·  Seamlessly integrates with storage arrays, hypervisors, applications and the full range of cloud provider solutions.

·  Safely move workloads across any type of infrastructure including public cloud, private cloud and on-premises.

·  Built-in operating environments, resiliency, virtualization and storage technologies from Red Hat.

·  Delivers customers a unified, modern data protection and management platform that delivers cloud-like services on-premises.

·  Offers customers enterprise-scale coverage with an integrated modern scale-out approach.

Insight and Analysis: Analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) said: “Commvault is delivering scale-out protection storage within [its] own software. You could call it built-in, software-defined, scale-out protection storage, but Commvault calls it HyperScale.”

An IDC survey of 700 users found a high degree of satisfaction with Commvault software.

However, it is aimed at the mid-market and enterprise, not for SMBs. Smaller companies looking for a scale out protection likely want to look elsewhere.

Implementation: The appliance can be installed out of the box in less than 30 minutes.

Delivery: Commvault HyperScale Technology may be delivered as either an appliance or as software based on a reference design.

Markets and Use Cases: Commvault HyperScale is not designed for SMB or home office. It is designed for larger environments that require greater scale, performance, support, and integration.

Agents: Commvault does not require the use of agents.

Pricing:  Commvault HyperScale Appliance is offered as a subscription and available in four configurations based on the usable TB capacity. The subscription includes the hardware, software, installation, maintenance and a hardware refresh at the time of subscription renewal.

As a starting point, Commvault HyperScale Appliance begins at under $25,000 per year, for 29 TB usable capacity (Base2) Appliance, five-year subscription. Solutions increase in price based on the capacity size, configuration, and the selected alliance partners’ compute/storage platform (software solutions with a reference design).
