Quantum Puts Rocksoft to Work
It is the first product implementation of Rocksoft's de-duplication technology, which ADIC had acquired in March, just a few months before ADIC was itself acquired by Quantum. It is also the first joint Quantum-ADIC product.
Quantum's new DXi3500 and DXi5500 appliances eliminate and compress redundant data, boosting data capacity by 10 to 50 times while still maintaining 220 MB/s performance, twice as fast as competing solutions, said Quantum director of enterprise marketing Shane Jackson.
Quantum said the appliances allow WAN-based remote replication of backup data as a practical tool for disaster recovery between distributed sites such as data centers and regional offices.
"Data de-duplication is a powerful technology, bringing real and immediate value to end users," stated Heidi Biggar, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "Combine that with hardware compression, asynchronous replication, and onboard monitoring and diagnostic tools, and Quantum's got a powerful message. The speed at which it was able to bring this new product to market is no small feat, and is a testament to the direction and integration of the newly combined company."
The DXi appliances combine technology from both ADIC and Quantum in an integrated software layer that also includes a high-performance embedded file-system, high-speed data compression, asynchronous replication, interface flexibility, and monitoring, alerting and diagnostic tools.
The appliances offer capacity options for extended data protection ranging from 250 GB to 11 TB. Assuming typical data mixes and standard backup methods, the appliances can offer up to 216 TB of disk-based retention capacity using an average 20:1 de-duplication ratio, enough capacity to retain months of backups on disk for an 11 TB primary data set.
The DXi3500 and DXi5500 are fully integrated appliances that can be presented to backup software as a NAS mount point (CIFS/NFS) or as a VTL with either Fibre Channel or iSCSI interconnect. Pricing starts at $24,000 for an entry-level solution.
