With its sights set on market leader EMC Data Domain, Quantum today introduced the mid-range DXi6700, which has a VTL interface and bundled data deduplication and replication software. (Prior to EMC’s acquisition of Data Domain last year, Quantum supplied VTLs to EMC).

Unlike Quantum’s DXi6500 series of deduplication VTLs, which have Ethernet/NAS interfaces, or the high-end multi-protocol (Ethernet and Fibre Channel) DXi7500 series, the new DXi6700 deduplication appliances come only with 8Gbps Fibre Channel interfaces.

Quantum claims backup throughput for the DXi6700 of up to 3.5TB per hour. Capacity scales from 24TB to 56TB.

Quantum’s DXi6700 is positioned primarily against the EMC Data Domain DD670 (see “EMC doubles Data Domain performance”).

However, Quantum expects to significantly undercut EMC’s prices.

MSRP pricing for the DXi6700 starts at $159,000 for a 24TB version, while a 32TB configuration is priced at $184,000. All software is bundled, including data deduplication, replication, Advanced Reporting monitoring/utilization tools, and a “direct tape creation” feature that writes data from the DXi to tape over a direct connection, bypassing the backup server. The DXi6700 can be managed with Quantum’s Vision 4.0 software, which enables management of the company’s disk and tape systems.

The DXi6700 comes with four 8Gbps Fibre Channel ports (two for host connections and two for tape connections).
