CebaTech hopes to take the storage world by storm with a new end-to-end storage platform.

The three-year-old firm says its CebaIP Platform offers an easy modular approach for design engineers to integrate features into their application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) or field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).

The company’s initial products will focus on data compression and encryption. Co-founder and president Chad Spackman said the company’s technology can achieve compression ratios as high as 10:1.

“No other IP platform or subsystem offering dedicated to data and storage networking applications with this level of functional integration exists in the market,” said Spackman.

The company has yet to announce any OEM partners for the new platform, but says it is in discussions with potential customers.

The platform is a protocol-complete hardware and software framework for developing end-to-end data and storage networking solutions. Using the platform’s integrated advanced direct memory access (DMA) controller with the OpenBSD software driver, designers can quickly develop complete data networking and storage product solutions, the company says.

The platform enables modular protocol-level connectivity between the media access controller (MAC) layer and host application layer interface. With supported data rates ranging from 1 Gb/s to 10 Gb/s, customers can choose from various platform configurations for their data and storage networking products. Implementation is supported for both ASICs and FPGAs.

Platform configurations initially supported by the CebaIP Platform includes GZIP-based compression and decompression with optional advanced encryption standard (AES) support. A second configuration includes partial TCP/IP offload with optional link aggregation, VLAN, and large send offload (LSO) support. Both configurations are available with the CebaIP Platform advanced descriptor-based DMA controller and OpenBSD reference software driver.

Data and storage networking product providers can leverage the GZIP-based compression core independently as part of an embedded CPU, storage processor, or disk controller for applications such as WAN network optimization or disk, tape and flash-based backup with optional “data at rest” security. When coupled with the advanced DMA engine and OpenBSD driver, a complete compression/encryption PCI offload adapter card solution can quickly be assembled, the company says.

The partial TCP/IP offload configurations can be quickly adapted to meet the needs of embedded CPUs, network interface cards, or even complete host bus storage adapters (HBA), the firm says.

GZIP-based compression and decompression is available now, and the partial TCP/IP offload configuration will be available in the third quarter. Future configurations that include full TCP/IP offload, IPSec, iSCSI initiator and target, RDMA, and advanced rule-based filtering will be released in late 2007 and early 2008.
