EMC today announced new enhancements to its Atmos line of cloud-enabled storage systems and software. The updates include across-the-board performance improvements, Amazon cloud support and new software that provides Windows access to Atmos cloud storage.

The updates reflect EMC’s sustained efforts to become synonymous with cloud storage technology, according to the president of the company’s Advanced Storage Division, Amitabh Srivastava. “These new software and hardware platform capabilities meet the demands of the most progressive and sizeable cloud environments, and reflect EMC’s commitment to being the infrastructure provider of choice for cloud environments,” said Srivastava in a company statement.

In May, EMC made scaling and performance improvements to the Atmos platform. The tweaks made it possible to extend storage management and visibility to clouds as large as 100 PB across several sites as a single system. Networking received a 50 percent performance increase and node upgrades could be achieved 90 percent faster than before, according to the company.

Today, EMC continues on its march toward bigger and faster clouds with new systems and software that target the fast-growing cloud infrastructure market.

On the hardware front, Atmos G3-Dense-480 storage systems up the ante in terms of capacity with preconfigured offerings that pack up to 480 drives (3 TB) into 40U for a 33 percent increase in storage space for data center operators. G3-Dense-480 systems support 60 disks per node and feature new Intel-powered controllers and 10 GbE networking.

The storage platform’s underlying software also gets a big cloud interoperability boost.

With the release of Atmos 2.1, Amazon S3 API support joins REST API compatibility. According to EMC, adding Amazon’s cloud tech will allow organizations to “easily migrate their S3 applications to any of the more than 40 Atmos-powered public clouds around the globe or any internal private cloud they are deploying.”

Atmos 2.1 is available in three editions:

Atmos CE – Complete Edition for distributed locations. This is deployed on Atmos hardware.

Atmos LE – Light Edition for centralized data centers covering two sites, one tenant and one subtenant with limited policy controls. Also deployed on Atmos hardware.

Atmos VE – Virtual Edition for the full range of Atmos CE functionality on VMware-certified third-party storage.

Lastly, EMC unveiled GeoDrive Windows 1.1. The software grants Windows systems access to Atmos cloud storage. New features include support for CIFS Cloud Gateway as well as Microsoft clustering support along with new drag and drop file operations and shareable URLs.

EMC’s Atmos G3-Dense-480 Hardware, Atmos 2.1 and GeoDrive Windows 1.1 are available now.
