Sun Microsystems has whipped up a handful of storage products designed to accommodate its new line of Galaxy servers and meet regulations for data security and compliance.

The Sun StorEdge 5310 NAS Appliance Gateway system helps customers curtail technology spending because it helps them connect storage area network-based (SAN) storage into network-attached storage NAS systems.

Normally, customers would have separate arrays for NAS and SAN, which were walled off from each other and did not communicate. The new NAS appliance obviates this, allowing IT administrators to consolidate NAS and SAN-based storage into one storage pool, said Randy Kerns, vice president of strategy and planning for data management at Sun.

This enables users to more efficiently share files. The 5310 NAS gateway supports UNIX, Linux, and Microsoft Windows platforms.

The new Sun StorEdge 3320 SCSI array is a workgroup storage machine that is 0.5 times faster than Gigabit Ethernet and 3.2 times faster than 1 Gb Fibre Channel arrays. Kerns said the 3320, next in line after the 3310, is backwards-compatible with previous SCSI versions, and makes an ideal storage complement to the new Sun Fire X64 servers.

Sun has also made some improvements on the tape side, unveiling the StorEdge Capacity-Series (C-Series) Tape Libraries, based on technology acquired from StorageTek. These tape systems are geared to simplify data recovery and archiving, and help customers meet compliance and backup needs, Kerns said.

The new C2 and C4 tape libraries are meant to protect data for applications running on Sun’s new Fire X4100 and X4200 servers. The C-series linear investment model also allows for a pay-as-you-go capacity strategy, said Kerns.

On the software side, the executive said Sun has enhanced its StorEdge Enterprise Storage Manager 4 (ESM 4), adding a new portal function that lets customers launch all of their storage applications from a single Web home page.

New tools include the StorEdge Workload Analysis Tool and Sun StorEdge VD Bench Performance Tool, which help users analyze workload requirements.

Finally, the new StorEdge Data Replicator Software protects data from outages and disasters, providing quick recovery from data loss. Kerns said it is ideal for small- to medium-sized businesses or department-level deployments.

In the meantime, Sun is in the process of renaming its product line with the Sun StorageTek family name following the successful purchase of that tape storage specialist.
