Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) is boosting its EqualLogic data storage arrays with new solid state drive (SSD) tiering capabilities.

The EqualLogic PS6000XVS and PS6010XVS iSCSI storage arrays combine SASdrives and SSDs in a single enclosure for better density and performance.

And Dell has built on its automated load-balancing and data movement technologies in the new EqualLogic 5.0 firmware to add automated data tiering within the new arrays, automatically moving data between SAS drives and SSDs to make the most of the pricey flash drives.

Dell says the new EqualLogic firmware — available at no additional cost to EqualLogic customers — allows VMware infrastructures to reduce storage area network (SAN) traffic for the copy process by more than 95 percent and CPU utilization for the copy process by greater than 75 percent.

The arrays also get improved integration and performance for VMware and virtual desktop (VDI) environments.

Dell also unveiled the new 6-gig SAS-based PowerVault MD3200 and the iSCSI-based PowerVault MD3200i storage arrays for small and mid-sized businesses, doubling performance and capacity over previous versions.

And Dell added to its networking offerings with Ethernet switches from Juniper (NASDAQ: JNPR) and Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD).
