Bottom Line

The StorPool SDS solution is designed for a robust data center environment, typically one with a significant IT support staff. StorPool’s software-defined storage (SDS) solution was created for hosting companies, service providers and other companies that are building cloud computing environments.

It’s a software-only solution, and it runs on white box commodity servers. So it clearly is designed to be cost effective even as it geared for heavy workloads.

It claims to be “arguably the fastest and most efficient distributed storage software on the market.” While that claim may be arguable, StorPool does include a host of features – from thin provisioning to load balancing – that can boost performance, which would indeed translate to a speed boost.

Product Description

StorPool provides software-defined block storage that converts industry-standard servers into virtual SAN arrays. Designed for companies that are building cloud computing environments, it helps reduce storage costs and includes features like thin provisioning, data integrity, snapshots and clones, Quality of Service (QoS), self-healing, load balancing and more. It also scales linearly in capacity and performance, meaning that as you add more nodes, the storage also gets faster.

It runs on Linux and integrates with OpenStack, OpenNebula, CloudStack, OnApp and VMware.
