Bottom Line

If you're not sure exactly what kind or how much storage you'll need in the coming years, but you want to keep your costs as low as possible, Hedvig might be a good choice for you.

This software-defined storage (SDS) solution offers extreme flexibility and scalability, and it allows organizations to choose from a menu of additional features like encryption, deduplication, and thin provisioning. It's a very good choice for companies with private, hybrid or multi-cloud environments, and it also has some features that make it good for archive and disaster recovery or cloud migration.

But also be aware: founded in 2012 and officially launched in 2015, Hedvig is a very young startup focused exclusively on software-defined storage.

Product Description

The Hedvig Distributed Storage Platform's claims to fame are its flexibility and its scalability. Although particularly well-suited to private clouds, it can run on-premises or in the public cloud and in virtualized, containerized, bare metal or traditional environments. It scales from as few as three nodes to more than 1,000, and it offers block, file and object storage.

Customers can choose whether to add features like thin provisioning, encryption, server-side flash cache, snapshots, inline deduplication and compression and storage virtualization.
