Claiming an industry first, InoStor, a subsidiary of Norway’s Tandberg Data, yesterday unveiled its ValuNAS line of Serial ATA (SATA) NAS appliances for mid-sized businesses.

Housed in a 2U rackmount enclosure, the storage system incorporates RAIDn technology also found in the company’s InteliNAS line. RAIDn is a software library that establishes a unique parity scheme, resulting in a reduction in the number of disks required to safeguard data compared to typical RAID configurations.

In an example comparing RAIDn to RAID 1+5 (15), which could be considered overkill to all but the most critical storage systems, the company points to the ten drives required to protect data on four drives under the latter. Using RAIDn, the total number of disks required to offer the same protection drops to seven while offering comparable levels of reliability and availability.

Naturally, admins can eschew RAIDn and configure the appliances to support RAID 0, 1, 4, 5 and 0+1.

The ValuNAS 6000 can be configured with up to 960 GB of storage, while the 9000 model tops out at 2.25 TB (RAID 0 Striping). Both feature a rackmount 2U form factor, Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports, and redundant power supplies.

Connectivity to external tape autoloaders and libraries is provided by a SCSI port in the 9000 model. The 6000 model, however, can be purchased with optional internal SLR or SDLT tape backup.

The ValuNAS line begins shipping this month with pricing starting at $5,999.00 for the 6720 with 720 GB of storage.
