Storage vendors continue to see as much opportunity in protecting and backing up data as they do in storing it to begin with.

IBM, Sepaton and Double-Take rolled out the latest versions of their data protection offerings this week, Sepaton on the hardware side and IBM and Double-Take on the software side.

Big Blue rolled out Tivoli Storage Manager 5.5, with improvements in data security, performance, functionality and ease of use.

“Business of all sizes need data protection solutions that will not only manage their information growth, but that can also provide solid business continuity, protection against system disruptions, data security and quick recovery of critical data in the event of an outage,” said Craig Smelser, IBM’s vice president of Tivoli Storage and Security Development.

TSM 5.5 includes improved data security, encryption and key management for TSM clients. TSM now generates, encrypts, stores and manages the encryption key in the TSM database for TSM clients, in addition to other security features.

It also boasts better recovery for large SQL databases and Exchange servers thanks to Volume Shadow Copy Service support, and integration with VMware Consolidated Backup protects VMware environments and coordinates the movement of virtual machine data from the VCB proxy server to tape devices.

Sepaton, meanwhile, boosted the performance and capacity of its flagship virtual tape (VTL) offerings, which are OEMed by HP.

The S2100-ES2 Series 750 VTL scales to 1.2 petabytes of uncompressed usable capacity and offers data rates up to 9600 MB/second, doubling the performance and capacity of competitive offerings from the likes of EMC, IBM and Sun, Sepaton officials say. With compression and de-duplication, capacity can reach 60 PB. Sepaton also added RAID 6 for improved data protection.

Sepaton officials say they plan to introduce file indexing and search next. Pricing for the S2100-ES2 Series 750 Rack Ready starts at $59,000, and pricing for the S2100-ES2 Series 750 starts at $102,000.

Double-Take rolled out version 5.0 of its eponymous replication software. New features include full server failover, SharePoint support and improved management and other new support features.

Bob Roudebush, Double-Take’s director of solutions engineering, said the full server failover feature is also useful in VMware environments.

“As the buzz has turned up on virtualization, disaster recovery has become one of the killer apps for it,” he said.

SharePoint protection is in addition to the company’s support for Exchange and SQL. Pricing for Double-Take 5.0 is $2,999 per server for the standard edition and $4,999 for the enterprise edition.

Also this week, DataDirect unveiled a storage system that wrings high-end performance, reliability and capacity out of SATAdrives.
