Intel and LSI say they plan to change how RAID is deployed on servers and workstations, but users will have to wait a while for details.

The two announced a partnership at Storage Networking World in Orlando this week to “redefine how advanced RAID data protection is deployed on future Intel Xeon-based server and workstation platforms.”

The technical collaboration will bring together Intel’s next-generation RAID technology, codenamed “Treemont,” and LSI’s MegaRAID software to protect data on Intel server and workstation platforms.

Intel says Treemont technology is an open architecture built on multi-core technology, virtualization, advanced RAID processing and storage interfaces. It is “designed to optimize data protection and performance, while making advanced RAID solutions widely accessible to businesses of all sizes,” the company said in a statement.

“We think we have a very compelling approach,” said Seth Bobroff, general manager of Intel’s Storage Group.

LSI said the rise of server virtualization requires new approaches to RAID and data protection. “The line between storage and servers is blurring,” said Phil Bullinger, executive vice president of LSI’s Engenio Storage Group.

LSI’s MegaRAID software will use the Treemont architecture to make its capabilities available to a broader range of Intel server and workstation solutions, the company said.
