MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — The data storage company Pure Storage is adding a “top-end” model to its flash array line.

Pure Storage’s FlashArray//XL is intended for mission-critical enterprise applications, from massive databases to containerized and cloud-native apps, according to the company last month.

Pure Storage believes application demand can “shoot up in an instant,” and the need for new apps to be deployed requires IT to “work in hours, not months.”

Enterprises can scale up storage with FlashArray//XL as well as scale out with Pure Fusion, a self-service, autonomous storage-as-code platform, to “keep IT infrastructure agile and up-to-date.”

The combination enables storage tiers and data policies with tools to optimize storage pools and workload placement.

FlashArray//XL was developed to improve total cost of ownership and support green data center standards: by enabling workload consolidation on fewer arrays to simplify operations, reduce rack space requirements, and reduce power consumption and cooling costs.

The storage hardware also features always-on data protection to ensure that stored data is secure, available, and recoverable after disruptions, including malicious attacks.

FlashArray//XL was built with the following technical specs: up to 5.78 PB effective capacity; as low as 150 µs latency; up to 36 GB/s throughput; 5:1 data reduction average; 10:1 total efficiency; and proven 99.9999% availability in a 5U platform.

“Customers expect a new, modern way to scale enterprise storage,” said Shawn Hansen, VP and GM of FlashArray, Pure Storage.

Hansen said FlashArray//XL is “a clear shot across the bow of legacy storage vendors by combining high-end scale of a true enterprise-class array with the scale-out agility of the cloud operating model.”

Eric Burgener, research VP in the enterprise infrastructure practice at IDC, said that for top-tier applications, like massive databases, “enterprises need maximum performance and density, but they also want the control of their own data center and the agility and flexibility of the cloud.”

Enterprise-class storage solutions that are “coupled with the cloud operating model give customers the best of both worlds,” Burgener said.
