Company description:  Originally an independent company, Data Domain was acquired by EMC in 2009. In the past two years, EMC itself was acquired by Dell. Both acquisitions have added to the breadth and enterprise feature set of Data Domain backup and data protection tools. Dell Technologies is an independent company based in Round Rock, Texas. Dell EMC services customers across 180 countries – including 98 percent of the Fortune 500 – with a portfolio that spans from edge to core to cloud.

Product description: Data Domain offers scalable, cloud-ready protection storage for backup, archive, long-term cloud retention and modern disaster recovery. It incorporates delivers deduplication technology that speeds up backup up to 50% and reduces network utilization up to 98% in addition to delivering a low cost-to-protect by reducing storage requirements. Featuring the Data Domain Data Invulnerability Architecture, it guards against data integrity issues with inline data verification, continuous fault detection and self-healing. Data Domain supports a wide ecosystem of enterprise and homegrown applications.

Dell EMC, however, provides several other enterprise backup and data protection products such as Dell EMC Networker and Dell EMC Avamar software. Each could be given their own position within this guide.

ESG said: “Dell EMC has expanded the Data Domain platform from simply a component of a data protection infrastructure to the basis of an ecosystem that includes production storage, backup vendors, archive vendors, and plug-in accelerants for applications. Data Domain … reduces the cost of protection capacity by 57% to 81% compared to Data Domain environments with competitive backup software.’

This means that the full benefits of Data Domain are best used in conjunction with other Dell EMC backup tools. Those using backup tools from competitors may not realize the same results.

Implementation: Dell EMC Data Domain can serve as the target backup storage with both Dell EMC backup software as well as software from competitors.

Delivery: Appliance or as virtual software.

Markets and Use Cases: Data Domain can protect data in physical, virtual and cloud environments, as well as any vertical segment. It is used in enterprise, SMB and ROBO environments.

Agents: With Data Domain, you can backup directly to protection storage without the use of an agent. When using Data Domain with Dell EMC Data Protection software or other backup applications from a competitor, an agent is required.

Pricing: Pricing starts at less than $9,000.
