The STORServer Inc., S10000 Backup Appliance is a small, low cost Backup Appliance that includes everything a company needs when it comes to complete storage. It’s an all-in-one backup solution that offers three distinct products in one package: backup, archive and disaster recovery.

The new S10000 contains all the functionality of a larger Backup Appliance in a much smaller footprint. Starting at only $19,900 and ranging in size from 90Gbytes to 270Gbytes, the S10000 offers an economical and compact solution for the smaller business. But since the S10000 is expandable, it is also a key solution for larger companies because it can support environments over 2 Terabytes (TB).

To expand the S10000, simply upgrade the tape drives to AIT2 or AIT3, and double the number of tape storage slots in the tape library. Using AIT2 tape drives, the system supports environments its from 180GB to 540GB; and with AIT3 tape drives it supports environments from 360GB to 1.08 TB. By doubling the number of tape storage slots, an AIT2 based system can handle 360GB to 1.08 TB, and an AIT3 based system can handle from 720 Gig to 2.16 TB.

The S10000 is configured as a tabletop/deskside system, or can be upgraded to mount in a standard 19″ rack. The tabletop version has two pedestals–one that holds the server and one that holds the tape library. The rack configuration uses 9U (just under 16 inches) of rack space. The optional rack KVM uses an additional 3U (just over 5 inches) of rack space.

“What makes the S10000 so exciting,” says STORServer(R) President John Pearring, “is that even with the expansion options, it’s all housed in the same small unit.”

The company’s shift from a cabinet approach to a rackable/stackable design is significant, he continues. The S10000 (without the rack KVM unit) is under 16″ high (9U) in a rack configuration compared to STORServer(R)’s previous low end solution, the K1000A, which was in a four foot high cabinet and only expandable to 800 Gig. “Customers who choose the rack option can put the S10000 in their own existing rack so there will be a cabinet look to it,” says Pearring, or STORServer(R) will offer racks for customers without rack space.

“The cost of the S10000 fits into a lot of budgets for a small appliance that solves so many business problems,” says Pearring. “The integration of data management hardware and software into one appliance provides a backup solution that has a lower total system cost compared to the cost of the same components purchased individually,” he continues.

For the S10000, customers need only to buy client licenses after the purchase of the appliance, and agents for their databases. Support on the S10000 is an annual fee, and STORServer(R) offers both phone installation and on-site installation.

STORServer(R) appliances back up any LAN, SAN and NAS-attached client that utilizes directly attached storage. The appliance supports 35 different platforms, including Windows NT/2000, Novell, HP/UX, SUN, AIX, and OpenVMS. Special fiber connections for SAN clients are also available.
