NEC, NetApp Unveil New Data Storage Wares

NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) and NEC showed off new data storage systems in a week that was full of news from storage vendors.

NetApp announced the new FAS2040 storage system and price reductions for its FAS2020 systems and software, which now come with high-capacity drives and multi-protocol support.

The FAS2040 offers twice the performance and 30 percent more capacity than other FAS2000 storage systems, with pricing starting at $7,920.

NEC, meanwhile, updated its HYDRAstor grid storage platform for backup and archiving with a big performance boost, WORM capability, data resiliency features, in-flight encryption, quota management, capacity on demand and additional deduplication features.

Dot Hill Systems (NASDAQ: HILL) unveiled unified virtual RAID adapter (VRA) technology that promises to bring high-end RAID features to low-end servers.

Avere Systems, a startup founded by veterans from the NetApp-acquired Spinnaker Networks, announced $15 million in Series A funding from Menlo Ventures and Norwest Venture Partners.

About its technology, Avere said simply that it is “pioneering the use of multiple storage media in a new scalable architecture that provides enterprise storage customers with breakthrough reductions in cost, space and power.”

The startup is expected to reveal more details soon.
