Spinnaker Networks today announced that its SpinServer3300 is now fully NDMP 2.0 compliant. NDMP compliance will simplify backup among multiple SpinServer installations.
NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) allows backup systems to be centrally managed across multiple devices while helping to minimize network traffic. NDMP, as an embedded protocol, separates the data path and the control path, so network data can be backed up locally yet managed from a central location, streamlining and lowering the cost of managing network storage resources. NDMP allows administrators to back up critical data using any combination of SpinServer 3300s and compliant backup devices and software.
The addition of NDMP support enables SpinServers to be utilized as part of a LAN-free backup strategy using third-party NDMP software applications. LAN-free backup removes backup traffic from the network, eliminating the impact on regular network traffic and improving backup performance and reliability. To date, Spinnaker has certified Veritas NetBackup DataCenter software, Quantum’s SDLT220, Dell’s DLT1, IBM’s 3580 Ultrium LTO and Hewlett-Packard’s Surestore Ultrium 230 tape drives, and StorageTek’s L20 LTO-based tape library for NDMP backup and restore operations with the SpinServer 3300.
“NDMP is a critical management tool for all administrators charged with protecting NAS-based data assets,” said Jeff Hornung, Spinnaker Networks’ Vice President of Marketing. “NDMP backup allows network administrators to efficiently backup SpinServer data, while minimizing the impact of backup traffic and enabling the use of existing backup hardware and software.” As part of the company’s commitment to support open standards and interoperability, Spinnaker is a sponsor of the NDMP initiative. Spinnaker’s SpinServer 3300 product line is a NAS designed to eliminate the complexities of storage management inherent in traditional NAS architectures, while offering high levels of capacity and performance scalability for both NFS and CIFS environments. Combining a switched Gigabit Ethernet clustering design with SpinFS, a unique 2-stage distributed file system, the SpinServer family does away with the NAS island nature of other NAS products. It enables management of up to 512 SpinServers in a cluster as a single global storage pool, thereby reducing the time, complexity and cost of effectively managing large-scale NAS storage assets.
Enterprise Storage Forum offers practical information on data storage and protection from several different perspectives: hardware, software, on-premises services and cloud services. It also includes storage security and deep looks into various storage technologies, including object storage and modern parallel file systems. ESF is an ideal website for enterprise storage admins, CTOs and storage architects to reference in order to stay informed about the latest products, services and trends in the storage industry.
