IBM today announced it gained 3.2 market share points, more than any vendor in storage management software in 2001according to a recently released report from Gartner Dataquest.

Of the top three leaders in the market, IBM leads with 32% YTY sales growth in 2001. The other two vendors had 13.7% growth and 10.6% growth respectively. In a related report, Gartner Dataquest concluded that IBM would move up to the #2 spot in storage software if array-based software was removed from the analysis, highlighting IBM’s broad storage support, in addition to IBM’s TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server, “codenamed Shark” array-specific software.

According to the Gartner Dataquest report, “2001 Storage Management Software Market Share,” IBM grew market share in every major category, while its main competitor lost market share in most categories.

Gartner’s report includes three major categories, Storage Infrastructure, Data Management and Enterprise Storage Resource Management. In the Storage Infrastructure category, IBM showed growth in both sales and share under Core Storage Management Technology. Core Storage Management technology includes IBM’s Parallel Access Volumes, introduced in 2001, and Tivoli SANergy. More notably in Data Replication, which includes technology such as IBM’s FlashCopy, XRC and PPRC, IBM gained more than 9 points of share and moved to the #2 spot.

In the Data Management category, IBM grew to a commanding share of 60.6% in the HSM and Archive subcategory where IBM’s DFSMShsm and Tivoli Space Manager are the critical technologies. In Backup and Recovery, IBM grew sales 10 percent moving up to the # 2 position in market share. Backup and Recovery offerings from IBM include IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, Tivoli Disaster Recovery Manager, DFSMSdss, and CICS/VR.

In the final category, Enterprise Storage Resource Management, IBM grew sales 11 percent. In the subcategory Storage Resource Management, IBM grew sales 15 percent. IBM also grew sales 30 percent and 7 percent in the Device Resource and Media and Library subcategories respectively. Device resource technology from IBM is StorWatch, while Media and Library is DFSMSrmm.
