The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) will host the fifth annual Common Internet File System (CIFS) Conference and Plugfest August 19-23, at the Network Meeting Center in Santa Clara, California.

The event brings together leading software, applications and networking engineers, product and technical marketing experts, and managers engaged in the development of CIFS-enabled products to establish a more comprehensive understanding of the CIFS protocol.

The increase in network attached storage (NAS) deployments, which commonly use the CIFS protocol, has helped push the issue of interoperability to the forefront of the storage community. According to the SNIA, at the CIFS Plugfest, vendors will have the opportunity to test the interoperability of their CIFS implementations in a collaborative setting.

“The plugfest is an opportunity to bring various CIFS client and server implementations into a confidential, secure development and test environment to identify and correct implementation issues,” said Jim Norton, Chairman of the SNIA’s NAS CIFS Technical Work Group. “Both the plugfest and conference are valuable opportunities to work out compatibility issues and learn from each others’ experiences.”

The conference program includes tutorials, presentations, and engineering roundtable discussions in which CIFS developers will be able to share their technical experiences and expertise with attendees.

Event sponsors include EMC, Network Appliance, HP, VERITAS, Byte and Switch, Computerworld and InfoStor.
