Continuity Software has upgraded its disaster recovery testing and monitoring software to add new features like service level agreement management and cluster support.
Continuity RecoverGuard software monitors changes in IT configurations and alerts users when a change may create a disaster recovery vulnerability, using a database of more than 3,500 “risk signatures.”
EMC (NYSE: EMC) has been working on a similar capability for data backup with its Data Protection Advisor.
Continuity CTO Doron Pinhas said he welcomes the entrance of larger players to the market. “It demonstrates that the larger vendors are trying to solve a real-world problem, but I’m not too worried,” Pinhas told Enterprise Storage Forum.
Such services can reduce the need for disaster recovery testing — or at least reduce risk between expensive and time-consuming DR tests. Pinhas called the DR monitoring and reporting software “the best thing you can do between tests,” noting that customers typically find in DR testing that their only problems were those that Continuity RecoverGuard had identified but weren’t fixed.
Deni Connor, principal analyst of Storage Strategies NOW, said in a statement, “Configuration drift, which occurs when production or primary infrastructure configurations change or differ from the recovery or secondary infrastructure, is an inevitable condition in today’s constantly changing data center. This can create serious data protection gaps. … Not surprisingly, configuration drift is one of the primary reasons disaster recovery and high availability systems fail, exposing businesses to higher risks of data loss and extended outages.”
RecoverGuard’s new SLA Management feature offers a detailed view of SLA compliance for ensuring that data protection goals are met. Version 5.0 also gets new support for Microsoft Failover Cluster, IBM PowerHA, HP Serviceguard, Solaris Cluster, Linux clusters and HP PolyServe.
The replication monitoring software also gets integration with CMDB systems and Microsoft Active Directory, as well as new reporting features for host configuration, database storage utilization and NetApp filer replication. EMC, IBM and HDS storage arrays are also supported.
Despite the down economy, Pinhas said Continuity Software had a “very good year, with nice sales,” and also turned cash flow positive last year.
