NEC Moves Data Deduplication Down Market

NEC Corporation of America is adding to its data deduplication story with the release of a new midrange backup and archiving appliance.

The HydraStor HS3-210 offers the features of bigger HydraStor units in a 2U rackmount enclosure, with pricing starting at $40,000 for raw capacity of 4TB, $65,000 for 8TB, and $90,000 for 12TB. With deduplication, that translates into effective capacity of 52.5, 105 and 157.5 TB.

Four 1GbE ports can provide throughput of 350 MB per second, or 1.3 TB an hour.

The HS3-210 shares a common code base with the larger HS8-2000 grid-based solution, so the new appliance comes with enterprise-class features like NEC’s DataRedux inline deduplication, snapshot technology and Distributed Resilient Data technology with customizable resiliency levels.

The company claims 150 percent greater data resiliency than RAID level 6 with lower storage capacity overhead, no idle spare drives, faster reconstruction and optimized performance for normal I/O.

The HydraStor line also comes with a number of options, including a RepliGrid replication and disaster recovery option, HydraLock to ensure the authenticity of data and maintaining chain of custody to meet compliance regulations, and Optimized Copy for automated WAN-optimized copy services for Symantec NetBackup OpenStorage (OST).

Gideon Senderov, director of product management and technical marketing for NEC’s Advanced Storage Products Division, said the closest competitor to the new HS3-210 is the EMC (NYSE: EMC) Data Domain DD630.
