Sun Wants You To Comply

Acknowledging that compliance management software is a multi-billion-dollar opportunity for vendors, Sun Microsystems unveiled a package this week designed to help enterprises address regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA.

The Sun Compliance and Content Management Solution is a bundle of hardware, software and services that will eventually replace Infinite Mailbox, the company’s e-mail archiving solution.

The bundle includes the Solaris operating system, Sun StorEdge SAM-FS software and compliance software from records management software maker AXS-One, which corrals electronic records such as e-mail and instant messages.

The Sun bundle will be offered with products the company released last year, including the Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System software and the Sun Content Infrastructure System for automated archiving.

A.J. Mahajan, spokesman for Storage and Data Management at Sun, said StorEdge SAM-FS is a key ingredient for this compliance package because it ensures that data cannot be modified. Unaltered data is critical for ensuring reliable evidence in litigation issues.

AXS-One and Sun recently completed a full-scale joint testing project to verify the scalability of the Sun Compliance and Content Management Solution, as well as to establish implementation and best practices recommendations for customers.

E-mail archiving is critical at a time when the glut of e-mail in corporate computing infrastructure threatens to clog the pipes. IDC said in a recent study that e-mail archiving applications revenue is expected to top $180 million worldwide in 2004, up from just $33 million two years ago.

It is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of more than 50 percent through 2008, driven by the regulatory environment and corporate governance, as well as the need to respond to urgent litigation and discovery requests.
