Veritas NetBackup is a backup and recovery software suite designed for enterprise users that back up and restore files, directories, and raw partitions on a server.

Veritas NetBackup solution supports major databases such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL as well as operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and Linux.

Veritas NetBackup offers to automate and orchestrate application lift-and-shift and recovery. Its key features include data deduplication, replication, and snapshot services. With NetBackup, the client sends data across the network to a NetBackup media server that selects the correct storage media as a backup target.

As an enterprise backup product NetBackup protects popular VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors, and it backs up data to disk, tape, and public clouds. With NetBackup 10 — now powered by Cloud Scale Technology — users can accelerate the adoption of cloud use cases and new virtualization technologies.

The cloud backup market

The global cloud backup market value was $10.61 billion in 2021, and it is expected to reach $24.53 billion by 2029, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.56% from 2022 to 2029.

Veritas NetBackup features

Veritas NetBackup provides enterprise-class full-featured, secure, and automated backup across multiple servers.

Automated and secure

NetBackup with Cloud Scale Technology is an enterprise-class data management solution, which combines automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and an elastic architecture to improve agility and data security across any cloud, at any scale.

Automated operations deliver a more cost-effective and sustainable cloud and cyber resilience capability to recover business-critical data with active cyber defenses. With NetBackup and Cloud Scale Technology, users benefit from data intelligence and regulatory security-driven protection across traditional, infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), software as a service (SaaS), hybrid apps, and data.

Portability and resiliency

NetBackup is a portable solution that accelerates the adoption of cloud use cases including backup to the cloud; archive to the cloud; disaster recovery (DR) to the cloud or in the cloud; and new virtualization technologies including Docker containers, Red Hat Virtualization, OpenStack, and fully agentless VMware.

It supports moving, copying, and restoring data to or between clouds. To be resilient, users need to be able to recover from any real scenario. NetBackup provides a simple, non-disruptive way of validating users’ resiliency plan for assurance and compliance through automated recovery and rehearsal of business-critical applications.

Visibility and control

NetBackup IT Analytics helps enterprises to gain the visibility essential to identify underutilized, misconfigured, or unindexed IT resources they can repurpose to achieve significant cost savings. NetBackup IT Analytics allows analysis and reporting on performance across NetBackup and identifies hosts with no recent backups to ensure their recoverability.

NetBackup also improves security and compliance with role-based access control (RBAC) and storage, an external certificate authority, two-factor authentication, proactive smart metering licensing models, and dynamic NAT.

Differentiators

Some of the key areas of differentiation for IBM Cloud Backup are given below.

Recovery vault

NetBackup Recovery Vault is a cloud-based data storage integrated with NetBackup and a fully managed secondary storage option. It offers a single, flexible repository for all data sources, from on-premises to public cloud workloads. A

Recovery Vault also simplifies cloud storage as a service, delivering limitless scale without compromising security or compliance policies, whereas traditional approaches to cloud data protection aren’t keeping pace with IT risks and complexity. Recovery Vault effortlessly scales protection across any cloud model while controlling costs, and intelligent cloud policies and air-gapped multicloud isolation ensure resilience.

Appliance solutions

NetBackup Appliance Solutions is an easily deployed and managed ransomware-resilient NetBackup data protection, and the appliances bring together the power of NetBackup software with state-of-the-art servers and storage technology to enable fast deployment of enterprise-class data protection.

With complete life cycle support, Appliance Solutions delivers protection across every environment and simplifies enterprise data management while keeping costs down. The solutions optimize users’ infrastructure, reduce costs, and provide the advantage of multilayer security.

Flex Scale

NetBackup Flex Scale supports scale-out architecture optimized for ransomware resilience and reduces data management complexity. It maximizes the power of NetBackup data protection with a containerized approach and easily scales performance and capacity as data protection demands increase with standard, off-the-shelf servers.

The multilayer, immutable security architecture not only protects user data but also protects infrastructure. The integration of Flex Appliances with NetBackup maximizes the ability to manage, protect, and control enterprise data. With NetBackup Flex Appliances, users can create new Veritas NetBackup deployments in minutes tailored to meet specific business unit needs.

Veritas NetBackup use cases

Veritas NetBackup is a great product for enterprise servers managed by a large IT department, and experts recommend it based on reliability, ease of use, secure data retention, and accuracy.

“Veritas NetBackup has made our shortlist because it offered hardware-level replication and seamless VMware integration. But, it was the functionality-to-price ratio and its top industry ranking that convinced us Veritas would be a solid partner for our business continuity.” — Ivaylo Dekov, director of infrastructure at BORICA AD

“Backup your enterprise servers, so you don’t have to stay up all night rebuilding. NetBackup is used to perform automated file-level and disk-level backups of all enterprise servers. It is primarily used by the IT department but is also available to other departments as a service. The enterprise storage team provides this service to allow for the restoration of servers in the event of data loss or corruption. This is an invaluable tool for both business continuity and disaster recovery.” — Rick Lupton, systems programmer analyst at East Carolina University

“Virtualization is a way of life in our business. We’re excited about introducing virtualized servers, and there’s no doubt the complete, easy-to-use NetBackup virtualization functionality will have a major role to play here.” — Ziv Oren, vice president of technologies at 888 Holdings

Veritas NetBackup pricing

For backup solutions, it is difficult to provide exact sizing and performance information because the cloud tier sizing and performance of data will vary from customer to customer based on their need.

Veritas NetBackup pricing is based on the type of storage chosen and is typically priced per GB. For example, standard object storage typically runs approximately $0.023/GB per month, whereas archive storage currently runs about $0.004/GB per month and even less for archive storage tiers. Cost also depends on the region where the data is stored.

Conclusions

Veritas NetBackup is a stable, reliable, secure, and scalable software. It is designed to meet the needs of companies of whatever size and is a tool to protect and recover data.

NetBackup is a full-featured enterprise-class backup solution that simplifies data management with multicloud optimization and scale performance and data protection with ease across all applications and environments.
