The first installment of our storage product roundup from this week’s VMworld conference focused on the cloud, file-based storage and iSCSI. This time around, sister site InfoStor recaps the data protection, backup and recovery, business continuity and disaster recovery products unveiled at the show.
“Syncsort and NetApp teamed up to introduce NetApp Syncsort Integrated Backup, which combines Syncsort’s BEX backup management software, NetApp Snapshot and Protection Pack, clone and replication technology, and NetApp’s FAS2040 storage systems. Features include near-zero-impact backup for VMs; application-aware snapshot-based backups; instant VM recovery; bare metal recovery; and disaster recovery. The companies claim 99% backup and recovery success rates and an 80%+ reduction in backup footprints.
“Veeam previewed some new features in the upcoming Version 5.0 release of its flagship Veeam Backup & Replication software. The company’s Veeam vPower technology provides the ability to run VMs from backups, which enables new features such as Instant VM Recovery, SureBackup Recovery Verification, and Universal Application-Item Recovery (U-AIR).
“Instant VM Recovery allows users to start up VMs directly from backup files and provides a “temporary spare” for production machines. The company claims that Instant VM Recovery only requires a few minutes of downtime, vs. hours for a full restore.
“Veeam’s SureBackup Recovery Verification verifies the recoverability of every backup (including VMs and restore points). And U-AIR enables administrators to recover individual objects, or items, from any virtualized applications, vs. doing full restores.
“FalconStor Software showcased its recently introduced NSS SAN Accelerator for VMware View, as well as its Continuous Data Protector (CDP) for DR software. SAN Accelerator for VMware View leverages solid-state disk (SSD) drives to improve performance in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments.”
