McDATA(R) Corporation this week announced that its complete core-to-edge product line is now available worldwide as part of HP StorageWorks solutions. The product line is comprised of the Sphereon 4500 Fabric Switch (branded the HP StorageWorks Edge Switch 2/24) and the Intrepid 6140 Director (branded the HP StorageWorks Director 2/140).

As part of the HP StorageWorks family, the Edge Switch 2/24 and Director 2/140 have undergone HP’s rigorous testing in large-scale storage area network
(SAN) environments. HP customers can now deploy these high-availability switches as part of an HP StorageWorks network storage solution. “Both McDATA and HP worked with us to implement an enterprise SAN in our data center. The entire process went smoothly…in fact, the results exceeded our expectations,” said Dan Morales, managing director of financial systems for Continental Airlines.

“Continental Airlines has enjoyed one-time cost savings in excess of $2 million and recurring yearly savings of more than $1 million. At the same time, our application performance increased by 30-50 percent over legacy environments, and as an added bonus, we’ve seen a payback period of less than one year with an ROI of greater than 100 percent.”

Other companies that have implemented McDATA storage networks into their storage infrastructures have reported similar benefits, including:

  • Business continuance goals met or exceeded;
  • Maximized ROI;
  • Improved resource utilization;
  • Flexible and scalable solutions;
  • Simple, fast deployment;
  • Unparalleled reliability.

    “HP is dedicated to providing industry-leading, open standards-based storage solutions built on first-rate infrastructure products,” said Roger
    Archibald, vice president and general manager Infrastructure and NAS Division, HP Network Storage Solutions. “As part of our StorageWorks line, these new HP switch products from McDATA provide the basis on which to build highly available and high-performance network storage architectures. Through our
    demanding test environments and integration with HP management tools, such as HP OpenView Storage Management Software, customers can benefit from even more power and flexibility with HP StorageWorks SAN solutions.”

    All McDATA products in the HP StorageWorks family share common software and firmware architecture, including the HP StorageWorks Edge Switch 2/24 and
    Edge Switch 2/32, as well as the HP StorageWorks Director 2/64 and Director 2/140. Common architecture means seamless interoperability and management
    across the entire fabric, which translates into an outstanding ability to scale while maintaining performance and availability.

    “McDATA and HP share the value of providing customers industry-leading IT solutions. McDATA switches provide end users with unwavering access to their critical information, enabling lower costs, maximized resources, increased business efficiencies and peace of mind,” said John Kelley, McDATA president and chief executive officer. “The inclusion of McDATA’s latest products, Sphereon 4500 and the Intrepid 6140, an intelligent director platform, to HP’s
    currently offered McDATA product line, further extends our competitive reach into both the small-to-mid size and large enterprise markets.”
