A year after their merger officially closed, Sun Microsystems continues to combine operations with StorageTek, announcing on Tuesday that storage services are now all under one umbrella.

The systems vendor said it has added the TekCare best practices and service models from StorageTek to its own SunSpectrum service offering, dubbing the combined offering Sun StorageTek Service Plans.

Sun said the Sun StorageTek Service Plans combine the best of both the TekCare and SunSpectrum programs, including StorageTek’s 2,000 services representatives, integrated hardware and telephone support and on-site maintenance service.

The services will support multi-vendor environments in DAS, NAS or SAN storage systems, remote diagnostic and resolution services, firmware updates and continuous access to Sun’s customer resource centers, said Kitty Kelly, product marketing director of storage services at Sun.

Sun StorageTek Service Plans are a component of the SunSpectrum Support portfolio, which also includes services for Sun systems and software.

The $4.1 billion acquisition, viewed with mixed reactions, significantly fortified Sun’s ability to offer modular storage systems and added a fair bit of intellectual property to a company whose competitors include EMC, HP and IBM in the storage market.

Thus far, the integration seems to be proceeding smoothly.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company earlier this month unveiled the StorageTek 6140 and 6540 arrays — the first two machines to be offered under the Sun StorageTek brand.

These machines are geared toward customers who need to store and protect data in applications that are crucial to the lifeblood of a business.

In other storage services news today, Sun added two new additions to its Sun Data Migration Services suite: Sun ESCON to FICON Migration Service and the Sun Host-Based Data Migration Service, which migrate data and systems from one location to another.
