Storactive today announced LiveServ, a real-time, versioned backup solution that provides secure, up-to-the-moment protection for data in small to medium-sized enterprises. Complementing traditional schedule-based backup solutions, LiveServ compresses data and eliminates duplicate files. According to Storactive, this reduces the total volume of server data to back up, shrinking or eliminating backup times and extending the life of current hardware and software storage resources.

“LiveServ was designed to help control today’s growing data management requirements by providing tighter data security while reducing administrative overhead and enabling centralized administration,” said Tony Bautista, president and CEO, Storactive. “By deploying a LiveServ server within existing backup infrastructures, enterprises can significantly enhance the security of their data and assure the quick and safe reversal from the effects of data loss. Simply put, LiveServ is the only way to get servers back up and running with little to no impact from a system disruption.”

LiveServ employs a combination of real-time and file versioning technology to eliminate data vulnerabilities with true, up-to-the-moment server protection for data recency and availability. When placed between a server farm and an existing backup server, one LiveServ server can protect three to six other servers with fast disk-to-disk backup. This means that fewer servers must be backed up to tape, significantly shrinking the backup window and optimizing existing storage hardware and software investments.

Using real-time technology to capture changes as they happen, LiveServ eliminates data vulnerability between scheduled backups. Protected data is always current and can be recovered up to the minute a loss occurs. And, unlike simple mirroring, LiveServ captures every version of every file, so that any version can be recovered.

To minimize both network traffic and storage capacity requirements, LiveServ uses powerful compression and collapsing techniques. These make efficient use of existing hardware and eliminate duplicate copies of files and blocks. Finally, leveraging the speed and lower costs of disk-based storage, LiveServ’s disk-to-disk backup technology enables fast, transparent protection which dramatically speeds time to recovery.

“Users want up-to-the-moment protection from a backup product. Because LiveServ tracks changes as they occur, it effectively eliminates the between-backup exposure to data loss that exists in schedule-based systems. Its configurable versioning scheme can be set to balance granularity of protection against budget and storage requirements,” said Bill North, research director, storage software, IDC. “As a result, enterprises can build systems to reverse the effects of viruses, hacking and other malicious attacks, and selectively restore any amount of data, from an individual file or e-mail message to a full bare-metal recovery.”

LiveServ will be available in Q1 2003 and will start at $795 per LiveServ server.
