EMC’s Tucci Outlines Product Plans

EMC CEO Joe Tucci outlined some of the storage giant’s product plans on the company’s third-quarter earnings call with analysts today.

A system for Web 2.0 data centers and more products for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) are on the company’s agenda, he said. EMC also plans to offer a “spindown” feature on its disk libraries, similar to Massive Array of Idle Disk (MAID) technology, which saves power by powering down disks that are not in use.

Tucci also announced plans to offer thin provisioning, but said EMC will call it “virtual provisioning” — “because we do it better.”

Both EMC and its VMware subsidiary enjoyed stellar quarters, posting 17 percent and 90 percent sales growth, respectively. Wall Street responded favorably, sending both stocks about 9 percent higher in Thursday’s trading session.

EMC systems revenue was up 9 percent, software license and maintenance sales grew by 25 percent, and professional services, systems maintenance and other services grew by 25 percent. RSA security sales rose 22 percent.
