Enterprise Storage Snapshots offers a weekly wrap-up of what’s going on in the storage industry. Here are our storage news highlights for the first week of November: Storactive releases its new LiveServ backup and recovery software solution for Microsoft Exchange servers, XIOtech and Tek-Tools partner on storage management and performance reporting, and Kanguru Solutions unveils a new NAS appliance.
Storactive’s LiveServ Delivers Zero-Loss Data Protection for Exchange Servers
Storactive’s new LiveServ disk-based backup and recovery software solution provides continuous, zero-loss data protection for business-critical Microsoft Exchange email servers. The software’s real-time technology automatically and continuously backs up data as it is changed, eliminating windows of vulnerability between scheduled backups and allowing administrators to quickly restore everything from a single email message to an entire information store.
Its transparent protection captures every version of every message, so that any version can be recovered. And LiveServ’s exclusive point-of-failure rollback enables administrators to recover data up to the moment a loss occurred, even if Exchange’s logs are corrupted or destroyed. This facilitates the complete reversal of the effects of viruses, human error, and hardware, software, or system failures.
“Storactive LiveServ takes a new approach to data protection, combining the benefits of both scheduled backup and real-time replication, but adding
capabilities that eliminate the vulnerabilities of both,” says Bill North, research director of storage software at IDC. “For instance, LiveServ’s
ability to rapidly recover downed Exchange servers, while excluding corrupt log files, gives IT administrators the power to restore recent data up to
the point of failure, regardless of the cause of failure.”
“This goes beyond what traditionally has been thought possible and may spur organizations to explore new possibilities in protecting their critical email server data,” continues North.
“We designed LiveServ to work alongside existing backup systems or to be placed between a server farm and traditional backup server,” states Tony
Bautista, president and CEO, Storactive. “In either case, with the minimal investment of deploying a LiveServ server within an existing backup infrastructure, enterprises can add the significant advantages of continuous data protection and rapid brick-level restores while also increasing data
security and business continuity.”
Storactive LiveServ for Exchange is available now with introductory pricing of $995 for the LiveServ server and $2,495 for each protected Exchange
server.

XIOtech and Tek-Tools Team on Storage Management
XIOtech Corporation’s partnership with Tek-Tools, Inc. has been extended with the launch of Tek-Tools’ Storage Profiler 3.0 and its enhanced support for XIOtech’s Magnitude storage solution. Storage Profiler works with Magnitude software release 9.50 to effortlessly monitor and report on Magnitude’s performance.
Storage Profiler 3.0 offers complete monitoring of backbone devices (including Magnitude, switches, and HBAs) and provides IT with a common tool to detect and anticipate storage outages. The software’s end-to-end storage area network (SAN) reporting aids administrators in identifying problems with their SANs and enables enterprises to track performance at a virtual disk (VDisk) level.
“With XIOtech’s release of Magnitude software 9.50, Storage Profiler’s support allows IT organizations to monitor Magnitude alongside other components of their storage network, including SAN, NAS, DAS, and backup applications,” says Ken Barth, President and CEO of Tek-Tools, Inc. “Storage Profiler provides a full spectrum of monitoring and file analysis features, allowing organizations to uniformly view, report, and make proactive and intelligent business decisions regarding their complex heterogeneous storage/backup environments.”
In addition to monitoring XIOtech’s Magnitude, Storage Profiler 3.0 also provides monitoring and analysis for VERITAS Backup Exec, Windows XP and Windows 2003, Network Appliance NetCache and Vfiler, as well as network-attached storage (NAS) devices.
Magnitude software release 9.50 includes numerous MIB enhancements and improvements for Magnitude subsystems. With software release 9.50, new values have been added to the Magnitude MIB to support node and port worldwide names for FC-AL cards. Values have also been added to support versioning information from the XIOtech SNMP service, which is now supported by ICON, the Intelligent CONtrol platform for simple, integrated management of both Magnitude and Magnitude 3D solutions.
“XIOtech is excited about its continuing partnership with Tek-Tools,” says Jim Brady, Senior Director, Product Line Management at XIOtech Corporation. “Our release of software version 9.50 enhances the MIB functionality of the Magnitude solution and facilitates Storage Profiler’s complementary reporting and monitoring. XIOtech is working with Tek-Tools to provide this same level of monitoring capability for Magnitude 3D by the end of this year.”
