SNIA Demos Multi-Vendor Storage Management Interface

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) is demonstrating what it calls the first common interface for the management of multi-vendor storage networks at the Storage Networking World (SNW) conference this week.

This interface is based on the Distributed Management Task Force’s (DMTF) Common Information Model CIM (Common Information Model) and WBEM (Web-Based Enterprise Management) technology and is being demonstrated in products and prototypes by SNIA member companies as part of the SNW Interoperability Lab. The configuration being showcased at SNW will demonstrate volume management, LUN masking/mapping, asset management, and status/event monitoring using clients and servers from thirteen leading manufacturers.

“Customers have been asking for a simple way to manage storage networks and CIM-WBEM technology is the answer. With CIM-WBEM technology, customers will be able to manage multi-vendor products with a single management application. This is a huge breakthrough as it will save customers a significant amount of time and resources,” said Brad Stamas, Chairman of the SNIA Board of Directors.

According to SNIA, the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) is the industry organization that is leading the development, adoption, and interoperability of management standards and initiatives for desktop, enterprise, and Internet environments. DMTF is chartered to adopt, create, and maintain the specifications and technologies that provide management tools with the ability to discover, deploy, and control management data in a standard way.
