ハードウェアの耐久性は、クラウドストレージ業界における重要な要素だ。世界各地のデータセンターに約25万台のハードドライブを保有するBackblazeは、主要なトレンドやデータポイントを明らかにするため、四半期ごとの調査結果を分析して公開している。

同社は10年前にこの調査を開始した。サイズ、モデル、メーカー別に年間故障率(AFR)を調べ、さらに故障時点におけるハードドライブの平均使用年数別に情報を分類している。レポートの執筆者であるAndrew Klein氏によると、2023年第1四半期のAFRは1.54%で、2022年第1四半期の1.22%から上昇した。

「四半期ごとのAFRの数値は変動しやすいが、さらなる調査が必要な傾向を特定するうえでは有用だ」とKlein氏は記している。

年間故障率

過去10年間のAFRの平均は1.4%だった。使用日数が220万日を超えるドライブのうち、AFRが最も低い(0.28%)のは、Western Digital Corporation製の16TBモデルだった。AFRが最も高い(2.57%)のは、Seagate製の4TBモデルだった。

While the Seagate drives generally showed higher failure rates overall, they also cost less, the report noted. “You could make a good case that for us, many Seagate drive models are just as cost-effective as more expensive drives,” Klein wrote.
